engaging and collaborative
Learning at Pleasant Street Primary School.
Student life at Pleasant Street Primary School is engaging and collaborative.
Our core focus is on Literacy and Numeracy, which we develop through the use of explicit, direct instructional learning, an emphasis on reading and writing rich, authentic texts and hands on problem solving. Our Prep, Year 1 and Year 2 classes Literacy program includes whole class instruction in Sounds-Write, a systematic phonics program, to provide students with the code to read and write successfully. Our Numeracy program has a focus on hands on materials, collaborative problem solving and students developing a deep understanding of the 'big ideas' in Numeracy.
Inquiry learning is diverse and explores themes such as Health, Ethics, Geography, Digital Technologies, History, Civics and Citizenship and Government. All classes also have a STEM inquiry topic each term which involves construction, creativity and investigation.
We offer specialist subjects in Art, Japanese and P.E as well as learning experiences in computer coding, nature play, gardening, Bike Ed, debating, choir and chess. Sport and physical education is part of the culture at Pleasant Street Primary School, with many different opportunities for students including athletics, swimming and cross country. Senior school students are also able to try out for many interschool competitions such as tennis, swimming, cricket, football and lawn bowls.
One of our core beliefs is the importance of a positive approach to wellbeing, which we foster through mindfulness practises in each classroom, as well as explicitly teaching the Respectful Relationships curriculum every week. In 2022 we will be introducing The Resilience Project and beginning a partnership with Real Schools to introduce Restorative Practises throughout the school.
