knowledge sticks to knowledge
Learning at Pleasant Street Primary School
Student life at Pleasant Street Primary School is engaging, consistent and structured.
Our core focus is on students building deep knowledge about the world and foundational skills in Literacy and Numeracy.
We follow a structured literacy approach that focuses on phonemic awareness, synthetic phonics, fluency, vocabulary and reading challenging texts about our content focus. We have Soounds-Write as our synthetic phonics program from Foundation to Year 6. Students learn sentence structure as well as how to write extended texts. Students are active learners who read and write about what they learn and then use their knowledge to investigate, experiment, create or influence.
In Maths we run a structured program including Daily Review each day for fact fluency and concept recall, whole class explicit teaching with worked examples and then independent work time where students work on their own, in pairs or with the teacher. Students use materials and manipulatives to support their understanding.
Inquiry learning is diverse and explores themes such as Health, Personal Development and Ethics, Geography and World and Australian History, Dance, Drama and Media, Science and Sustainability and Civics and Citizenship and Government. Our Inquiry program is designed to build on knowledge each year. Students read and write about the content they are learning each day.
Arts are an important part of our culture at Pleasant Street. In Term 3 each alternating year we run a school concert featuring the Dance and Drama skills of our students or an Arts Festival where the school is filled with the Visual Art of our students as well as a screening of their film making talents.
We offer specialist subjects in Art, Japanese, STEM and P.E as well as learning experiences in Bike Ed, debating, instrumental music, choir, chess and school camps. Sport and physical education are valued at Pleasant Street Primary School, with many different opportunities for students including athletics, swimming and cross country. Senior school students are also able to try out for many interschool competitions such as tennis, swimming, cricket, football and lawn bowls.
One of our core beliefs is the importance of a positive approach to wellbeing, which we foster through mindfulness practises in each classroom, as well as explicitly teaching the Respectful Relationships curriculum every week. Students are involved in clubs where they can meet other peers who share the same interests and passions.
